This
film offers us the remarkable opportunity to follow a Tibetan Lama on
his return to his birthplace after a 30 year exile, in a region forbidden
to foreigners since 1959. Phendé Rimpoché fled from Kham
(Eastern Tibet) in the midst of the Chinese invasion and after many peregrinations
married a French Buddhist. They are now living in Normandy (France) where
they teach Tibetan Buddhism. After a long wait for Beijing’s authorization,
the Lama and his family are finally allowed to return to Tibet for a one-month
visit. After being deprived of a spiritual leader for thirty years, the
villagers anxiously awaited his arrival. He is after all considered a
living Buddha. Phendé Rimpoché’s overwhelming emotion
carries us on a spiritual and visual journey through the land, the culture,
and the people with which he can physically but not emotionally separate.
Through the Lama’s eyes, we discover the reality of the Tibetan
people. Deprived of political autonomy, they nonetheless face adversity
with faith and courage since true freedom for them is a spiritual one.
