John Wamsley is a shy, self-conscious giant. But when he discovered that the fauna of Australia was dramatically disappearing, this solitary man became pitiless and went to war. He gave up his successful career in mathematics to attack harmful animal species and the government to create wildlife protection laws. John did everything. There were no limits. Nothing could stop him. Neither death threats, nor prison…

In 1969 he created the first Australian animal sanctuary : Warrawong!

Since then, red kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and other rare species live in total freedom in a habitat recreated as it was 200 years ago. The whole of Australia now flocks to Warrawong to discover species believed by all to have disappeared. Wamsley's success has earned him the nickname of the "wizard of Warrawong" but also the "big bad wolf", since his wildlife conservation efforts do not always please either the government or local councils.
